A 23-year-old Spanish Fork man died Tuesday after a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 89, just off U.S. Highway 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon.
According to Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Cameron Roden, Destry Miller was killed in the accident. He was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the other vehicle involved, 24-year-old Springville resident Peter Grayson, suffered severely broken legs and was flown by medical helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Roden said. He is in serious to critical condition.
Roden said the accident happened around 3:30 p.m. at mile post 303. Miller was driving a Ford Ranger northbound on Highway 89 when he crossed over into the southbound lane. Grayson was driving a Jeep Cherokee southbound on the road. He noticed that Miller's car was in his lane, so he moved to the left to avoid the Ford. Miller corrected back into the northbound lane and the two vehicles collided head-on.
The road was closed for about an hour and a half while officers investigated the scene, Roden said. There are no signs that alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident. The investigation into why Miller crossed into oncoming traffic is ongoing.
