FARMINGTON -- Lisa Steed seems to have a radar for bad drivers.

The Utah Highway Patrol officer has made more than 200 alcohol-related arrests this year. In her five-year career, Steed has apprehended more than 750 people suspected of driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

"She's a great asset for the citizens of Utah to have working on the highway patrol," her supervisor, Sgt. Shane Nordfelt, said.

And now Steed has been honored as trooper of the year, the first woman to get the award. It comes from the UHP's Honorary Colonels, a group of influential Utahns.

Nordfelt said the award is for outstanding police work and a community-based approach to public service. He calls Steed a "little ball of fire and energy."

"She works well with the public. She'll stop for motorists that need help, changing tires or getting off the freeway," he said.

A graduate of Weber State University, Steed holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. She worked as a dispatcher while attending school.

The West Point resident said her fellow officers deserve credit for the award. She will also get the Public Safety Star for extraordinary acts or accomplishments.

"Without the people I work with, and the sergeant's and lieutenant's support, I couldn't have made it to these goals," Steed said.

She has made more than 1,200 arrests in five years. So far this year, Steed has stopped more than 2,000 cars.

"She's got a work ethic that's second to none," said Kim Farnsworth of the UHP. "I've never seen anyone work so hard."
