Crews mostly watched a helicopter dump load after load of water on a lingering blaze in Provo Canyon on Saturday.

The helicopter dumped 10 tons of water at a time on a blaze near Bridal Veil Falls, said Reid Shelley, assistant fire management officer with the Forest Service.

The steep terrain is prohibitive to hand crews.

"It's steep," Shelley said. "Obviously we don't have any people on it right now."

The canyon fire -- which has burned 40 acres -- was one of two man-made fires started several days ago, the other being on Y Mountain. The fire in Provo Canyon destroyed the abandoned Bridal Veil Falls Restaurant, though investigators are still trying to determine whether the fire was started accidentally

On Saturday, the helicopter wasn't able to reach the top of the fire because of strong winds and instead worked the bottom of the fire.

"It's got a pretty good smoke column on it," Shelley said.

The wind was expected to shift at nightfall and force the fire back on itself, making it easier to extinguish.
