ALPINE

A dearth of available construction crews and machinery has slightly delayed construction on a controversial charter school in Alpine. "We are just now mobilizing," said Glenn Way of U.S. Charter Development, the firm hired to build Mountainville Academy. "Every contractor in the state is working their fanny off and it is going to take us 24 to 36 hours to get people on the job. We are in the process of mobilizing a grader and backhoes." School organizers had vowed on Tuesday to begin construction Wednesday after Alpine Planning Commissioners refused to consider their preferred site plan.

New computers, a remote server and other equipment are making it possible for the library collection information to be available online. Patrons may place holds on books, check their fees, pay fines, and check the status of holds they have placed. "I have heard a lot of real positive comments from people in the community," said LeRee Parkinson, who is on the library staff. "They will be able to look online. I think it will be a great asset to the community."

Mack Croft, a city resident, has sent a letter to the Planning Commission expressing concern about the way the irrigation ditches were going to be at the proposed Day's Meadow subdivision, at about 6150 W. 10680 North, on more than 11 acres. Developer Steve Hoyal told the commission in a recent meeting, "We are already addressing the issues of the irrigation ditches. Only two people take water from the ditch, Croft and myself. I have to use it so I will make sure it will be easy to access from the diversion box on the northeast corner of the subdivision." He also told the panel he was in the process of getting the engineering completed to pipe the ditch on the south side of the project. The 13-lot subdivision received a recommendation for final approval on May 23.

The City Council adopted a $3 million budget for the city's 2006-07 fiscal year on Tuesday, an amount approximately $300,000 higher than the city's 2005-06 budget. As a result, their salaries were raised to meet the average of those cities.
