Eagle Forum founder and president Phyllis Schlafly will be the keynote speaker at the Utah Eagle Forum's annual convention Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Schlafly has been a leader in the U.S. conservative movement since 1964 and is an author, speaker, columnist and radio commentator. The Eagle Forum, which advocates for a number of conservative causes, was founded in 1972.

The convention will take place from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Salt Lake Community College, 4600 S. Redwood Road. Registration at the door is $30 per person. For more information, call (801) 254-7446.

Other speakers on the agenda include U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah; state Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, and state Rep. LaVar Christensen, R-Sandy; and Gayle Ruzicka, president of the Utah Eagle Forum.

Schlafly also is scheduled to speak to teens and college students at 7 p.m. Friday in Room 203 of the SLCC technology building.

AMERICAN FORK

The City Council has announced the intent to annex the Mitchell Springs Annexation at 750 North and 700 West and the Richard McKinney annexation at 745 North and 950 West. Anyone who wishes to comment has 60 days. They may write to the city at 51 E. Main, American Fork.

CEDAR HILLS

True to campaign promises, and after a year of lackluster community services offerings, the new City Council seems to be headed for a reinstitution of some of these services. New Councilwoman Charelle Bowman requested Jan. 3 that the council discuss the city's community services director position at its next meeting Jan. 17. Though councilman Jim Perry told her, "We can't do anything until there's funds for it," Bowman still insisted on opening up the issue. "I want that on the agenda so we can talk about it," she said.

EAGLE MOUNTAIN

On Saturday, Eagle Mountain held its second inaugural ball. Residents, local politicians, state law makers and Congressman Chris Cannon all came out to welcome the new leaders into office.

The ball also was held to raise money for the Citizenship Literacy Fund, which will support the city library. The city was able to raise approximately $8,000 that night.

HIGHLAND

Alpine City Councilman Tom Whitchurch introduced himself to the Highland City Council on Jan. 3 as the newly appointed liaison between the two councils. "I will be attending your meetings for a few months, so please feel free to contact me. I am also over the parks and recreations and open space, youth council and arts council in Alpine," he told them.

Highland does not presently have a council member assigned as liaison with Alpine, although Mayor Jay Franson noted he has regular meetings with Alpine's mayor and several council members are on committees such as the Special Service District with members of the Alpine council.

LEHI

City leaders have approved a $470,000 purchase/lease agreement with Thomas J. Peck and Sons for property to provide future green space for the community north and northeast of the Lehi Cemetery.

OREM

The Orem City Council voted Tuesday to give a $10,000 grant to the Orem Heritage Museum to keep the facility funded through the rest of the fiscal year ending June 30. The museum, located in the SCERA Arts Center, is largely operated by a core group of volunteers. A State of Utah grant recently expired.

SPANISH FORK

Bernice (Bea) Harmer Woffinden was honored as the senior of the year at the Spanish Fork Senior Citizen Center's monthly membership banquet Friday.

Woffinden helped run her family farm, worked for the school lunch program for 20 years, was a member of the Utah County Fair board and has been a 4-H leader for 52 years.

SPRINGVILLE

The PTA for Cherry Creek Elementary is putting together a nominating committee to choose members for the PTA board.
