After lasting 36 days in the jungle of China, Pleasant Grove resident Todd Herzog is one of the final four on the CBS television series "Survivor: China."
Herzog, who said he has closely watched all 14 previous seasons of the show, was characterized as a "schemer" during Thursday's teaser for the final episode, a three-hour finale which will air Sunday beginning at 7 p.m. on channel 2. He has built up strong alliances but in the process has irked some of the castaways that will be competing against him for the show's $1 million prize. Herzog was almost eliminated last week.
"I had a little bit of paranoia, when I heard my name read twice at the last tribal council, but I still feel kind of comfortable," Herzog said before Thursday's elimination round. "I feel like I'm in the right alliance."
On Sunday, one of the four, which include Amanda Kimmel, Courtney Yates and Denise Martin, will be eliminated during the first hour, and in the second, contestants who have previously been eliminated from the show will choose a winner from the remaining three. The third hour is a reunion show with all the show's 16 contestants.
At the start of the show, 16 American contestants were marooned near Zhelin Lake in China's Jiangxi Province. They compete in various challenges and vote one contestant off each week.
Herzog received praise from Jeff Probst, the show's host, as a good player. He quit his job as a flight attendant to be on the show and try for the prize.
Herzog calls himself an "openly gay Mormon" and believes the producers cast him on the show because he has lived a very interesting life. He trained for months to get in good physical shape for the various challenges the contestants face.
Herzog knows how well he did on the show, but can't say because he's under contract. So even his family has to watch the show to find out what happened to him in China's jungle.
