At 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 1, the word went out that there was a fire in Spring Lake. The Payson Fire Department responded and soon saw it was traveling pretty fast up the mountain. Payson Fire Marshal Scott Spencer called for more help from neighboring towns.

Santaquin, Salem, Spanish Fork, Mapleton, Genola and Goshen fire departments all responded. One of Provo's departments came over and covered Payson's station while all the firefighters were out on the fire.

A total of 200 firefighters from Utah, Idaho, Arizona and Nevada have worked to contain the fire since it began.

The firemen all worked so well working hard to save the homes and buildings. All the homes were saved.

Two helicopters were called in and one bomber with retardant was called. The helicopters filled their containers from the Spring Lake Pond and carry it to the fire.

The flames went fast and covered a lot of territory. They were afraid that the fire would go over into Payson Canyon and threaten the water tank. Elk Ridge staged in Payson Canyon and helped there.

The campgrounds were evacuated along with the Boy Scouts at Maple Dell Scout Camp. Several homes were evacuated also. No one was injured.

The fire took most of the help from the Annual Salmon Supper at Payson Memorial Park but others stepped up and help make the supper a success.

Three or four firefighters were overcome with smoke and had to be brought out, but all were fine.

The fire was mapped at little more then 760 acres and was fully contained on Monday evening.

The fire was caused by a downed power line. Forest Service spokeswoman Loyal Clark said the line came down due to "line fatigue," which means gradual wear weakened the line to the point where it eventually fell from its structure.

A Forest Service team will assess the extent of the damage and will determine whether reseeding or other measures must be taken to mitigate the threat of mud slides or debris flows, Clark said.

A big thanks go to all the wonderful firefighters who risked their life to save so much property and homes. The departments all worked so well together.
