A Farmington man was arrested Saturday after allegedly coercing a South Salt Lake girl into moving with him to Las Vegas.
According to documents filed in 4th District Court, officers were dispatched to Timpanogos Harley-Davidson in Lindon on Friday afternoon to assist with a girl complaining of abdominal pain. On arrival, they found 22-year-old Charles Parson who claimed that the 17-year-old girl was his pregnant wife.
The couple was dirty and appeared to be transient, and Parson provided California identification to officers, according to the report. The girl gave her name, but said she did not remember her date of birth. Officers ran checks on the couple and found that Parson is wanted in Georgia and Pennsylvania for unlawful sex with a minor.
After the girl was transported to the emergency room, police reports state that Parson was caught in a series of lies. He told police the girl was 16 years old and not his wife, but that she was emancipated, meaning the state recognizes her as an adult. Parson told police the two were travelling to Las Vegas on foot to get married.
Police questioned the girl, who said she had agreed to go to Las Vegas with Parson if he filed the paperwork to emancipate her, according to the report. However, as they travelled, she changed her mind and tried to go home. At that point, Parson grabbed her arm and dragged her down the street, and she tried to flag down a police officer.
The victim told police she was unable to find an officer and started feeling pain in her abdomen, according to the report. Parson told her they were already in Las Vegas and headed to his brother's home nearby, though they were actually in Lindon. The girl wanted to leave Parson, but she was afraid to be alone in another state. Parson agreed to stop at the motorcycle shop, but only if she told people they were married.
Officers called the victim's father, who said he had filed a missing persons report after she did not return home from school Thursday, according to the report. The girl was not emancipated and did not have permission to travel with Parson. Parson was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice and unlawful detention.
