AMERICAN FORK

Pancakes and Politics

The American Fork Chamber of Commerce will present a second and final Pancakes and Politics for 2009 on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 9 a.m. in the Education Room of the American Fork Hospital, 120 N. 1100 East, American Fork.

The public is welcome to attend and is invited to have a free breakfast. Several of the area's state legislators are expected to be in attendance and will address topics of interest to the group.

CEDAR HILLS

Baseball registration

Highland Cedar Hills baseball registration has begun. This Cal Ripken League is for players ages 5-12. The season runs from April 20 through the first week of June. Registration deadline is March 7. Tryouts for Majors and Minors are March 14 at the Heritage Park field in Highland. Major tryouts (ages 11-12, including Elite, age 10) are from 9 a.m. to noon. Minor tryouts (ages 9-10, including Elite, age 8) are from 1 to 4 p.m. Registration forms are available at the city buildings in Highland and Cedar Hills, but the city offices do not accept payments. Additional registration forms, more information, and online registration are available at www.highlandcedarhillsbaseball.org. Also, the league is looking for individuals interested in umpiring. HIGHLAND

Ivory Homes plan protested

Two Highland residents pro-tested a proposal to increase the density in Ivory Homes Phase five of the Dry Creek Highlands development in northwest Highland. Greg Parkinson and Carl Burney both decried the higher density plans. "When I bought my house I was assured phase five would be as it was shown. To change it would affect our area, property values and the place we live," Burney said.

LEHI

Police ask for help

The Lehi Police Department is looking for Lehi seniors who are willing to volunteer in assisting with a Life Choices/Drug Prevention program in the Lehi elementary schools. Those interested can contact Detective Bart Smith at 768-7110. "This can be a rewarding experience to assist the youth in our community," Smith said.

Volunteer seniors would receive training and materials to teach "making life choices."

"We would like to put volunteers in each of the elementary schools, possibly eight volunteers, one for each Lehi school," said Lehi police Lt. Darin Paul. "It would be similar to NOVA under the direction of the Lehi Police Department."

The "Life Choices/Drug Prevention" program closely mirrors the NOVA program which was suspended in Lehi November 2008 because of city budget issues.

OREM

Summer driver's education

Registration begins March 2 for the program at Timpanogos High School. (Student must turn 16 before Dec. 15, 2009.) Cost is $135. There will be only one session this summer, from June 22 to July 3. Class meets for three hours a day from 8 to 11 a.m. or 12 to 3 p.m. Attendance all 10 days is mandatory. The fee is paid in the financial office. Those registering should bring a receipt and their learner's permit to sign up in the counseling center.

Dr. Seuss Day -- Geneva Elementary will celebrate "Dr. Seuss Day" on Monday, March 2. This is also the day for "Dads & Doughnuts" for all grades, from 11:20 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Workshop -- Utah Nonprofits Association will host a How to Start a Nonprofit workshop in Orem on March 4, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. Join UNA for professional advice regarding the many issues involved. The workshop is presented by Don Gomes, UNA executive director. Gomes will lead the workshop, which will include professional guidance from a local attorney and CPA. Space is limited to 12 participants. This week in history

Feb. 27, 1969: The 1969 winners in the annual American Legion Auxiliary Essay Contest were announced by Lela R. Banks, Americanism chairwoman of the PG Unit 70 Auxiliary. The winners were Kathleen Simmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted C. Simmons, 460 South 1250 East, first place, senior high. Dawna Powell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean B. Powell, Locust Avenue, first place, junior high. Feb. 25, 1982: Seven lovely young women from Pleasant Grove and Lindon were vying for the title of Strawberry Days Queen in the 1982 Pageant to be held March 27. The contestants and their mothers met with committee members and Dixie Beck, representative of the Strawberry Days Association.

PROVO

Kindergarten registration

Children who will be attending schools in Provo School District need to register for kindergarten. The registration will be held In March and April. For dates and times for each elementary school, visit www.provo.edu or call 374-4800. Parents will register children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2009. (Born on or before Sept. 1, 2004.) This spring registration for kindergarten children is for the 2009-2010 school year. When you register your child, please bring your child's birth certificate, immunization records, social security card (original), proof of address and two names and phone numbers for emergency contact. If further information is needed, please contact the school your child will be attending. Also, if you know of families having kindergarten-age children who will be attending school next year, please share this information with them.

ROTC tournament

The Air Force ROTC Detachments of BYU, U of U and USU will be holding their annual Tri-Det Tournament at Weber State University on Saturday, Feb. 28. The event begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until 2:30 p.m. The tournament will consist of distance running, sprints, push-ups, sit-ups, dodgeball, marching competitions and football. Cadets will participate in these activities against the other universities, and the detachment with the most points will win the trophy. BYU Air Force ROTC cadets look to take home the trophy another year.

SARATOGA SPRINGS

Burn permits issued -- The Saratoga Springs Fire/EMS Department will be issuing burn permits for residential and agricultural purposes from March 14 through April 12. Staff will issue burn permits for the response area which consists of the city limits of Saratoga Springs, south of the city to milepost 15 on State Road 68, west of the Jordan River, north to Camp Williams and east of approximately 11000 West. Burn permits are only good for one year. The cost for a residential permit is $10 and an agricultural permit is $20. You can obtain a burn permit Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Saratoga Springs fire station located at 995 W. 1200 North. Cash and checks accepted.

COUNTYWIDE

Senior dances -- There are dances for Utah County seniors every Tuesday and Saturday night. On Tuesdays, dances are at the Eldred Senior Center, 270 W. 500 North in Provo, from 8 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $5 each. For more information, call 852-6620.
