Utah Valley Community College

Mini farce festival comes to UVSC -- UVSC's Department of Theatrical Arts for Stage and Screen will present two new comedies, "Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii," directed by D. Terry Petrie, assistant professor of theatrical arts, and "Tons of Money" directed by Ward Wright, assistant technical director and scene shop supervisor at BYU.

The farce festival will host each play showing on alternate nights starting Jan. 19 through Feb. 3 in the Ragan Theater.

In "Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii," Vivien Bliss, a romance author, sets out to spend a romantic weekend with respectably married school teacher Edgar Chisholm. She starts a chain of events that involves all the classic elements of farce -- confused identities, disguise, long-lost relatives, ambushes, chases and mayhem.

How Vivien gets her new novel finished in the face of, behind the back of, in spite of and with the help of an advice columnist, a nosy reporter, a doctor in panty-hose, an orphan with a cake and "Helga the evil Russian physicist," is the story of this comedy.

A play written in the 1920s and adapted by Alan Ayckbourn, "Tons of Money" takes the audience back to the light and careless time of the roaring twenties. Louise and Aubrey Allington are bankrupt, yet maintain their extravagant lifestyle on credit -- and the good will of their creditors, which has just run out.

They see the chance to improve their financial situation with the help of an inheritance, yet to avoid paying their debts, the couple will not take it. Various schemes and complications force Aubrey to fake his own death and become various fictitious people.

Tickets are $6 for UVSC students, $8 for other students, UVSC faculty/staff and seniors and $10 for general admission. They can be purchased at Campus Connection, (801) 863-8797, or at the door. Discounts are available when tickets are purchased for both shows.

Student to exhibit art show of fashion design -- UVSC alumna Holly Fullmer from Fallon, Nev., will display her senior art show titled, "Fit to Flare," Jan. 8-23 in the Gunther Trades Art Gallery, room 401.

The exhibit will include 11 different acrylic paintings of diverse sizes and shapes that encompass a theme of fashion design. Fullmer graduated with a degree in Studio Works and an emphasis in painting and drawing in December. "It was a lot of hard work; it really opened my eyes to the amount of effort that goes into completing each individual art piece before it is displayed," Fullmer said. "I have always been interested in fashion design so I wanted to create an exhibit that would show how my emphasis is used in such a field."

Fullmer is considering attending fashion design school in California where she would use her art skills to create new clothing designs. Fullmer has created postcards of her art work that will be distributed to several boutiques around the community.
