Cedar Hills will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on new parks this year.

Until now the city has had only three parks -- Heritage Park on Cedar Hills Drive; Sunset Park on Dorchester Drive; and Heiselt's Hollow Park, the softball field behind the city office.

A fourth park, Cedar Run, was completed this year, said Rich Knapp, finance director for the city.

The city began work on a fifth park last year, called Canyon Road, and work on that park will be continued this year if the budget for the upcoming fiscal year is adopted as proposed on Tuesday, he said.

The city had also initially budgeted money for three more parks last year but work was not started on those and all three have been carried forward in the new proposed budget, with work to begin this year, he said. Those three parks are Mesquite Soccer Park, Timpanogos Cove Park and Doral Drive Park.

In addition, three more parks have been proposed in the new budget, including the Bonneville Trailhead Park, Pumphouse Park, which are adjacent parks on Bayhill Drive, and The Cottages, which is in the south part of the city.

At the beginning of June, city staff put out an advertisement for bids on the Bonneville Trailhead Park, Mesquite Soccer Park, Timpanogos Cove Park and Doral Drive Park.

The new projects tentatively will be completed this October, according to city documents.

The city has budgeted $75,000 for Doral Drive Park, one of the city's "pocket parks" on the corner of Doral Drive and Tamarack Way in the Cedars East subdivision. City officials expect it to include a playground area.

The Bonneville Trailhead Park is also in the Cedars East subdivision on Bayhill Drive and is expected to cost $300,000. It will include trailhead parking, a playground, pavilion, walking paths and picnic areas to be added to the existing restrooms. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail connects from the mouth of American Fork Canyon at the Highland City Trail, goes south along Canyon Road then crosses under Canyon Road through a tunnel. It then continues just south of the LDS church at Bayhill Drive and Canyon Road.

One of the city's larger parks planned is Timpanogos Cove Park. This five-acre $430,000 park is off Timpanogos Cove, in the Canyon Heights subdivision. It will include a parking area, two playground areas, picnic areas, basketball courts, an amphitheater, restrooms and walking trails.

The $150,000 Mesquite Soccer Park was a land swap as part of the original plans for the Juniper Heights subdivision, and is on Cottonwood Drive. It will include one adult- and two junior-size soccer fields, with a playground and parking.

All these parks and trails, present and future, are open throughout the year. From April to October, existing parks can be reserved for functions through the city office at 786-9668. City residents pay $8 per hour per venue, and non-residents pay $16 per hour per venue.

To pick up a parks and trails map, visit the city offices at 3925 W. Cedar Hills Drive.
