PROVO -- A former Lone Peak High School seminary principal accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student was ordered to turn over a computer's hard drive and stay away from mines that he and the minor allegedly frequented.
Michael Pratt, 37, was in Provo's 4th District Court on Monday, where attorneys scheduled an initial appearance for next week. Monday's hearing was originally set to address Pratt's bail with an attorney present, but he posted his $20,000 bail early Saturday. Prosecutor Guy Probert said Pratt's freedom was in jeopardy if he did not turn over evidence to the Utah County Sheriff's Office.
"We have concerns about evidence and there is a basis on which he is not being rearrested today," Probert said.
Pratt was not allowed to leave the courtroom after his hearing until the hard drive could be produced. He remained at the courthouse for about an hour with deputies before he was allowed to leave.
"He's providing a copy of the hard drive," Probert said. "It is presently out of town. It's gone somewhere with the family."
Probert said the hard drive in question is from a laptop that is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The laptop is being returned by mail, he said, but a copy would need to be in hand as well Monday.
"The officer came ready to arrest him today," he said.
Police say Pratt engaged in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl for the last several months. Until his arrest, Pratt was principal of the Lone Peak High School LDS seminary, where the girl was a student. LDS Church spokesperson Kim Farah said Pratt was terminated after the allegations surfaced. According to a police affidavit, Pratt took the girl to various locations around Utah County to engage in sexual acts.
The couple allegedly met in a ravine and an unoccupied home near the girl's house, at a boxcar in Provo Canyon, Rock Canyon, Pleasant Grove, American Fork, Goshen and in a mine near Eureka. They were reportedly also seen skinny dipping near Goshen. Probert said he does not know the details of Pratt's agreement, except that he agreed not to return to the mine that he visited with the girl.
Judge Steven Hansen told Pratt official charges will likely be filed July 20, when Pratt will have his initial appearance in court.
"I am hopeful that the truth will be fully presented at the appropriate time," Pratt said, his voice breaking.
Pratt was booked into jail on three counts of aggravated kidnapping, unlawful sexual conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old, aggravated forcible sexual abuse, 10 counts of forcible sodomy, object rape, lewdness, three counts of burglary, criminal trespassing, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and 10 counts of enticing a minor.
Pratt was arrested on the aggravated kidnapping charges because of his position of authority and because he checked the girl out of school at least three times without the knowledge of her parents or school officials, according to police. The contributing to the delinquency of a minor may apply because the girl missed school for their excursions to the canyon.
