Everyone knows that rock crushes scissors, scissors cut paper and paper covers rock. A group of BYU entrepreneurs is using the familiar game to raise money for club events and charity.

BYU's Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization, or CEO, is hosting the second annual "Omniture Throwdown at BYU" Rock Paper Scissors tournament at the LaVell Edwards Stadium parking lot at 3 p.m. on Friday. Registration is $5 and can be completed the day of the event at 2 p.m. or online at ceo.byu.edu/rps.htm.

The grand prize is $3,000 donated by Omniture. The registration fee goes to CEO or The Entrepreneurs Club at Utah Valley State College and Enterprise Mentors International, a charity that provides micro-loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Derek Pando, president of CEO, said they are hoping to raise $10,000 and spread the word about entrepreneurship at BYU.

"It's an event that's open to everybody. We had a 7-year-old that made it to the top five last year," Pando said.

Mike Parker, a CEO vice president, said the event is also for amusement.

"It's a fun, random BYU activity," Parker said.

Students are trying to set the Guinness World Record for the biggest Rock Paper Scissors tournament and are hoping for more participants than 800, the number of people who played last year.

Renee Thomas, who works in marketing for Omniture, is sure the students will beat the record.

"We're confident they're going to break the world record," Thomas said.
