Utah War play
A new play, titled "March of the Salt Soldiers," written by James Arrington, associate professor at UVU and former UVU student Mahonri Stewart, is set to premiere at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Centre Stage in the Sorensen Center.
The Utah War Committee asked Arrington to write a play about the Utah War (also known as Johnston's Army and Buchanan's Blunder) that took place in the 1850s. Faced with writing a historical, educational play, Arrington selected Stewart, who is a former student of his and also an award-winning playwright, to assist in co-writing the play. Together they came up with a unique way to present the historical story.
The play is dramatic as well as comedic and is directed by David Morgan of BYU. The cast includes Hank Florence, Tatum Haugen, Jean Jenkins, Lawrence McLay, Lauren Moss and Ben Sansom. "March of the Salt Soldiers" will run Wednesday, Thursday and Sept. 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Centre Stage. Tickets are $6 to $10 and can be purchased at UVU Campus Connection, 863-8797. The play will also show at the annual Utah Historical Society meeting on Friday.
Historian to speak
Rex Ellis, a nationally acclaimed storyteller and historian, will be sharing stories and songs as part of his lecture at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the UVU Library Lecture Hall. His presentation, "Return to Maycomb," is part of the Orem Public Library's six-week Big Read program that is celebrating Harper Lee's classic novel "To Kill a Mockingbird."
Ellis has been a featured storyteller at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival and has written several books. He is director of exhibits and programs at the new National Museum of African-American History and Culture at the Smithsonian Institution, and former vice president of the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.
This is Ellis's first time participating in the Big Read program. The Big Read is a national initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The purpose is to provide citizens the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities. Orem Public Library chose "To Kill a Mockingbird" as this year's book to read and celebrate.
Other Big Read events and activities are held daily at the Orem Public Library and continue through Oct. 17. All activities have a "To Kill a Mockingbird" theme that include live music, reader's theatre, book talks, teen reader discussions, lectures, storytelling, puppetry and film screenings.
