Local hazmat teams, the National Guard and an independent lab all tested a "suspicious" white powder found at Utah Valley University on Thursday morning and confirmed it was not dangerous.
Classes will resume Friday as scheduled. School officials don't know what the substance was, only that it wasn't harmful, UVU spokesman Chris Taylor said. No one has claimed responsibility for leaving the substance.
The powder was found on a table in the Woodbury Business Building and "looked as if it had been deliberately placed," said Taylor, who added that approximately 200 people were evacuated from the Woodbury Business Building at about 10:45 a.m.
Special response teams from the cities of Orem and Provo, the 85th civil support team from the National Guard in Lehi, an independent lab and the UVU police were all involved in the response.
Lab results were negative for anthrax and other biological viruses, and tests for radioactivity and volatility were negative as well.
UVU was not reporting Thursday night what the substance actually was.
"In these situations, there is no such thing as being too cautious," Taylor said. "We wanted to take every precaution we could, and we feel like we've done that.
"We greatly appreciate the support we've received from all those involved in responding to this incident to help us ensure the safety of our campus community."
