FAIRFIELD

• Author and historian Curtis Allen will present a lecture on the fame and fate of Camp Floyd officers at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Fairfield Schoolhouse. Many of the Camp Floyd officers later served as Civil War generals. Allen has identified all of the officers and their history. The lecture is free and open to the public. • Utah Senate Majority Leader Curt Bramble, R-Provo, Rep. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem, and Rep. Keith Grover, R-Provo, will be discussing education issues at Cherry Hill Elementary School, 250 E. 1650 South, at 7 p.m. today. The meeting, organized by the Cherry Hill PTA, is open to the public.

• Eric Dursteler will speak at the Women's Studies Colloquium at noon on Thursday on BYU's campus. His presentation, "Fatima Hatun ne Beatrice Michiel: An Early Modern Renegade Woman," is drawn from his research of the early modern Mediterranean countries. His presentation will highlight Beatrice Michiel of Venice, a woman of the late 16th century who became an influential figure in the diplomatic and political affairs of the troubled time in the Ottoman history.

Dursteler joined the BYU history department in 1998. He received his Ph.D. from Brown University in 2000.Dursteler is a former Fulbright fellow and NEH fellow. In 2006-2007, he was a fellow of the Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence, Italy.

Every fall and winter semester, the Women's Research Institute sponsors the Women's Studies Colloquia, a scholarly forum for discussion. The Colloquia takes place every other Thursday at noon in 4186 JFSB.

• The Mountain Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross will be offering a First Aid/CPR/AED class the week of Jan. 21. This course trains individuals to teach the American Red Cross Lay (citizen) Responder CPR/AED and First Aid certified courses.

The class is ideal for businesses wishing to certify their employees in CPR First Aid or a church group or other organization wishing to certify members. This is an evening course running from Monday to Jan. 25 from 5-10:30 p.m. Instructor candidates wishing to take this course need not be medical professionals but are expected to pass a written pre-test as well as a CPR skills test.

• The monthly meeting of the Utah County chapter of the Utah Statewide Archaeological Society will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Provo City Library, 550 N. University Ave., Room 308. Jim Allison, assistant professor in the anthropology department at BYU, will be the speaker. He will present "Ancient Puebloan Communities and Landscapes in the Virgin River Region." SANTAQUIN

• On Monday, Santaquin officials presented a check for more than $7,000 to Stan Eggen, who's been raising money for the Utah Narcotics Officers Association Benevolent Fund and Utah Meth Cops Project. The money will help police officers who have been exposed to the deadly chemicals found in methamphetamine labs. At their wedding in December, Eggen and his wife, Tammy, asked that their wedding guests donate to the charities instead of buying gifts. Eggen was a founding member of the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force.
