• Meridian School, at 280 S. 400 East, will open its new doors today at 6 p.m. as it hosts the first of a series of open houses before class begins. The other open houses will be August 14 and 27, all running from 6 to 8 p.m. At the end of the 2007-08 school year, the school began the process of leaving its old Provo location where it has provided an alternative to public schooling to students from pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade for the past nineteen years. It will fill the vacancy next to Orem High School that used to hold the Christ Evangelical Church.

• The Utah Valley Surgical Weight Loss Program will hold a free educational class for people interested in gastric bypass surgery at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Northwest Plaza Clark Auditorium at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, 500 W. 1150 North. An individual may be a candidate for this procedure if he or she:
- Has Body Mass Index (weight in pounds x 703/height in inches¬²) of 40
- Has BMI of 35 or greater and is experiencing severe health-related conditions likely to benefit from weight reduction, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, sleep apnea, heart disease, etc.
- Is not dependent on drugs or alcohol
- Does not have uncontrolled psychological conditions
- Has not been able to maintain weight loss through other documented methods
