COUNTYWIDE
Between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. today the Utah Department of Transportation will close U.S. Highway 189 from Bridal Veil Falls to Frazier Park intermittently (up to 15 minutes) for avalanche control work.
Three main avalanche paths fall within this area of Provo Canyon. Due to the heavy snowfall and steep slopes, it is necessary to clear these areas of excess snowpack to ensure motorist's safety as they travel U.S. 189 during the winter months.
AMERICAN FORK
The annual city tree lighting is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Friday on the corner of Main Street and 100 East in downtown American Fork. Residents of all ages are invited to attend the holiday event; admission is free.
This year's tree features an added touch -- the ornaments were made by American Fork elementary school children. Parents are invited to come see their child's hard work on display.
The night does not end with the tree lighting. A holiday musical performance will be held immediately after the tree lighting ceremony across the street at the Alpine Tabernacle at 7:30 p.m.
Questions may be directed to Debbie Lauret, chamber president, at 756-5110 or chamber@afcity.net.
HIGHLAND
Highland is in line to have a funeral chapel next to the city cemetery. The Reisner subdivision where it is proposed to be built was granted final approval by the Highland City Council on Nov. 21. The subdivision includes two smaller building lots plus a large lot for the chapel. It will be along Canyon Road east of the cemetery. An amendment was added to the motion to require the buyers to pay 50 percent of the cost of a fence between their property and the cemetery.
One of the conditions of approval was there could be no sales conducted by the owners of the funeral chapel, which is being proposed by Anderson and Sons Mortuary.
