Twenty visual artists were awarded a total of $28,181 through the Utah Arts Council's 2008-2009 Individual Artist Services Grants program. Grants were awarded for painting, sculpture, mixed media, and filmmaking. The recipients in Utah county are: David Linn from Elk Ridge, Lauri Olson-Lisonbee from Salem, and Namon Bills of Spanish Fork. Artwork by the awardees will be featured in the 2008 IAS Showcase exhibition this December.
"This is the first year of our new, specialized grant cycle. We noticed some positive changes along the way, one in particular being the attraction of new applicants in the field of film. Film and digital media are areas of the arts that we feel are important to Utah's growing arts community. The new applicants are an encouraging sign that our relationship with that portion of the arts community is developing," said Margaret Hunt, Executive Director of the Utah Arts Council.
Forty-seven grant applications were submitted for consideration in the 2008 grant cycle.
Individual Artist Services Grants are offered on a cycle alternating between the visual arts, and the performing and literary arts. Grants are awarded to two categories of applicants: emerging artists, who are eligible for up to $500, and established artists, who are eligible for up to $2000. Works by all grant recipients are featured in a showcase exhibition at the Utah Arts Council's Rio Gallery during December of the year in which their grant was awarded.
