Santaquin police now say a 17-year-old boy died in a fatal accident Monday morning, not a 34-year-old man as previously reported.

Police chief Dennis Howard said 17-year-old Socorro Almanza Cierra, nicknamed "Coco," was driving south on 800 East in Genola at approximately 7 a.m. Monday when he ran a stop sign at State Road 141. Cierra's small Plymouth was struck by an eastbound pickup truck on State Road 141.

Howard said Cierra died at the scene, while his three female passengers were flown to area hospitals. A passenger, 14-year-old Estephanie Ortez later died as a result of her injuries as well. The two surviving teenage girls are recovering from surgery in Salt Lake hospitals and are now stable. The driver of the pickup was uninjured.

Police originally believed the owner of the car, 34-year-old Jose Guadelupe Almanza, was killed in the accident. They believed the identity of the victim had been confirmed with the family, until calls came in disputing the fact.

"The improper identification was made because of a language barrier and due to extreme trauma," Howard said.

The family came to Utah from Mexico, and the language and gravity of the situation likely contributed to the confusion. Almanza is actually Cierra's uncle and police were led to believe through some miscommunication he was the victim in the crash. However, they were later able to obtain another interpreter and speak with the family again, at which time Cierra's true name and age were discovered.

"We're waiting for a birth certificate to be faxed from Mexico," Howard said.

Police are still waiting on a full accident report, and Howard said all the details are not yet clear. He has not spoken to the surviving passengers, and Howard said he does not know what caused Cierra to run the stop sign.

"It was clear, but it was cold and icy," he said. "There were no skid marks that we could determine."
