SALT LAKE CITY -- An 11-year-old boy who was injured by shrapnel from a homemade firework while riding his bicycle was scheduled for an operation Monday that doctors hoped could save his left leg from being amputated.

Bridger Hunt has been hospitalized since he was critically wounded by shrapnel from what police said was a homemade firework made of pipe and compressed black powder.

The boy was about 30 feet away from the explosion as he rode home from a barbecue.
