SALT LAKE CITY -- A spokesman for Utah's top elections officer says turnout for the June 24 primary election was abysmally low.
Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert on Monday certified the elections results where just 7.97 percent of eligible voters participated. A spokesman for Herbert's office says it's the lowest turnout on record.
Summit County had the lowest participation with 2.4 percent and Piute County had the highest, with 49 percent.
A typical primary turnout is usually around 13 percent.
The Utah League of Women Voters is trying to get more people to vote, specifically targeting those with the worst turnout rates: young people, low-income residents and minorities.
