U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon kicks off his campaign today for a sixth term in Utah's 3rd District seat.

The Mapleton resident said he never considered retiring and believes his years in the House gives him an edge in Utah, where about half the national representatives have served only one term.

"It's definitely an advantage for the state," said Cannon, who chairs the judiciary subcommittee on commercial and administrative law. "I've been there long enough to know people and know my way around."

Known to dislike soliciting campaign contributions, Cannon said this election he is encouraging small donations with a newly simplified online donation process, which will accept contributions as small as $1.

"People who give you $1,000 expect something. People who give you $5 just want good government," he said. Many small donations "means you have good grass roots support."

Cannon said he doesn't know what to expect for competition. Prospective congressional candidates can't file to run until March 7, but announcements and rumors are emerging.

John Jacob, of Eagle Mountain, previously announced his intention to challenge Cannon, while rumors also place state Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo, in the race. Neither returned calls for comment Wednesday.

Cannon will speak briefly today at his re-election campaign kickoff at noon on the second floor of the Historic Utah County Courthouse, followed by lunch.
