A Brigham Young University student won $20,000 from ABC's "Live with Regis and Kelly" show on Tuesday when he correctly answered a movie trivia question.

Kyle Gardner, 23, a construction management student, was asked by co-host Regis Philbin, "What actress did Brooke Shields say will be playing her character's mother on 'Lipstick Jungle?' " Gardner's answer, "Mary Tyler Moore," earned him the $20,000 prize.

Gardner was encouraged by his wife, Natalia, to apply for "Live's Cash Dance Trivia," which required viewers to shoot their own dance video and submit it to the show.

Some of the most entertaining dancers who submitted their videos were chosen to answer trivia for a chance at $10,000, show spokeswoman Brittany Forgione said. Because Monday's contestant was unable to answer the question correctly, a total of $20,000 was on the line during Tuesday's program, Forgione said.

Gardner received a call from the show early on Tuesday with information that helped him earn the money reward, he said.

"At about 5:45 in the morning, I got a call telling me to brush up on [Monday's] show," Gardner said. "I Googled the previous contestant and found the answer about 10 minutes before they called back at 7."

For Gardner, the most exciting parts of the experience were having his family in Louisiana watch him on television and speaking with Philbin, he said. Gardner said he was grateful for his opportunity.

"I don't know if it was divinely inspired or anything, but it was a good experience," he said.

Next, the Live production staff will pick 10 of their favorite videos as semifinalists for a $50,000 prize. The semifinalists will be posted online where fans can vote for their favorites. The top five vote-getters will be flown out to New York as finalists for the cash award.

Gardner said he and his wife spent 30 minutes getting the video just right -- and annoying their neighbors downstairs with their loud music and stomping dance moves -- before giving the footage to a couple of friends who trimmed the video to 30 seconds, the maximum length allowed for the contest.
