A suicidal Brigham Young University student was apprehended Wednesday night after taking a handgun onto The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple grounds in Provo.

According to a Provo police news release, officers responded to a suspicious incident on the gated grounds at approximately 11:30 p.m. The officers saw two adult males in an open grassy area near the overflow parking lot. Officers made contact with the males and found one man to be in distress, holding a handgun to his chest. The other man was confirmed to be a friend trying to convince the man to put the gun down and not kill himself.

Officers removed themselves from the area and made contact by cell phone with the man in distress. An officer communicated with the man for more than an hour while the friend continued to speak with him as well. Eventually, the man was persuaded to put the gun down and his friend put him in a bear hug and pulled him away from the gun.

The suicidal man was apparently upset over disciplinary action taken against him by the LDS Church. He was transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center for a mental health evaluation. According to the news release, the man is 25 years old, and his identity is not being released.
