The 2007 election season is officially underway. Monday was the filing deadline for city council and mayoral races in Utah County.

City council races occur every two years, offset from the usual voting years for presidential elections and midterm elections.

In Provo, four of seven seats are up for grabs, including the seats of Cynthia Dayton, Midge Johnson, Barbara Sandstrom, and Steve Turley.

In 2005, council candidates spent big bucks in Provo. Chairman George Stewart spent $22,000 with his opponent Mark Sumsion spending $16,000. Most other candidates spent somewhere between $4,000 and $6,000.

In Mapleton, Mayor James Brady won't be running for re-election. Instead, his wife Laurel Brady will be running. As of Monday afternoon, she was the only person running.

Primary elections will be held on Sept. 11.
