A traffic study is now underway at the Lehi Main Street location where two people died July 31 in a multi-vehicle collision.

"Based on the unfortunate events that happened, we've already ordered a warrant study," said Geoff Dupaix, a Utah Department of Transportation spokesman.

The study is needed to determine if a traffic light is warranted at the intersection of 1700 West and Main Street (State Road 73), which could take up to eight months to plan, design and install, he said.

Merrill Gomm, 80, was driving a white Toyota Camry north on 1700 West when he pulled out in front of an eastbound semi-trailer on Main Street and the semi-driver, in trying to avoid the Camry, swerved, hitting both the Camry and a westbound yellow Volkswagen, according to police.

Merrill Gomm and his 53-year-old son Craig Gomm died at the scene, said Lehi Police Sgt. Darren Paul.

Three others were injured.

Doug Bassett, UDOT Region 3 traffic engineer, spent Tuesday visiting the accident area and answering phone calls about the incident.

"It's been a hot topic around here," he said.

Lisa Owen of northwest Lehi would like to see the light put in soon, before school starts in the fall.

"It's sad that it happened, " she said of the deaths. "It's a crazy intersection. I've had to cross that when my kids missed the bus and you go through with a prayer, seriously you do."

Two schools have buses that cross Main Street multiple times a day to transport students -- Snow Springs Elementary and Willowcreek Middle School.

The speed limit along S.R. 73 is 45 mph, but the traffic generally speeds by at 55 mph. Dupaix and Bassett say there is no need to change the speed limit although as part of the study traffic speeds will be recorded.
