The Provo city economic redevelopment district is approaching its three-year sunset in March, but the Municipal Council plans to renew it.

The city has announced plans continue the 0.14 percent property tax on local businesses as part of the downtown economic redevelopment district.

The council will consider the measure during their May 15 meeting. Protests of the plan must be filed in writing with the city by May 14 at 5 p.m.

Susan Bradford of the Downtown Alliance, the organization which administers the redevelopment district, said that the zone was first created six years ago at the request of local business owners.

The tax is expected to cost business owners between $175 and $10,000 per year. Once passed, the zone will be in existence for another three years. The city expects that it will spend about $507,000 on the redevelopment zone over the next three years. Business owners in the area can choose to pay the new tax all at once or in three annual installments.

The zone encompasses 35 city blocks and takes in the area from 100 South up to 200 North between 300 East to 600 West.

Between 300 West and 100 East the zone goes as far as 400 North.

The cash is set to fund marketing, beautify of the area, business expansion and retention programs, as well as transportation improvements in the area.
