INVESTIGATION DROPPED -- THE UTAH COUNTY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE has dropped its investigation into whether a mailer financed by Lehi Mayor Howard Johnson violates state laws intended to keep public entities from influencing elections.

The mayor sent a two-sided flyer on Oct. 24 to Lehi residents with a letter expressing his support for the quarter-cent sales tax hike for transportation. On the back of the letter was an ad for the Republican "Big Red Bus" tour to Lehi. Johnson used city staff and equipment to create the letter.

"We have concluded our investigation at this point," Kay Bryson, county attorney, said. "We are not going to take any action at this point. The flyer was ordered by Mayor Johnson, invoiced to him, paid by him and no city funds were used by him."

MAGAZINES NOT A PROBLEM IN LEHI -- LEHI BUSINESSES BEGAN COVERING UP SCANTILY CLAD MEN AND WOMEN ON MAGAZINE COVERS NEARLY TWO YEARS BEFORE SPANISH FORK AND OTHER CITIES, RECENTLY IN THE NEWS, THOUGHT IT NECESSARY TO PASS AN ORDINANCE TO ENFORCE "DECENCY."

The Lehi Community Council, a consortium of civic and city leaders in Lehi, asked for and gained the cooperation of businesses 18 months ago.

"The Standards Committee went looking at that and there was one store in Lehi that had questionable material and they pulled them. They won't sell the magazine anymore," Linda Turner, committee member said. "We need to keep monitoring it. We have new businesses coming it all the time."
