ATTORNEY REQUESTED -- January Krebs, 28, of Provo, had her first appearance in court Tuesday on charges of negligent homicide and reckless endangerment. Judge Steven Hansen granted the request and Krebs will appear for a hearing on August 1 at 8:30 a.m. Krebs is charged in the death of her 1-year-old son, who drowned in a bathtub in February. According to police, Krebs left to get some towels out of the dryer and came back only five minutes later to find her son in the tub with his 2-year old brother, who was taking a bath at the time.
GPS USED TO FIND CAR -- An employee at the Hampton Inn in Orem went to work Monday morning and later noticed her car missing from the parking lot. Around 10:30 a.m. she reported the theft of her white Jeep Wagoneer and told Orem police that her "phase II" cell phone was inside the vehicle. A "phase II" cell phone has GPS tracking capability and police tracked it to Sandy.
Officers stopped the vehicle and arrested 23-year old Kilee Kunze of Springville and 22-year old Alison Jarvis of Spanish Fork. The car was returned to its owner and the two women were charged with auto theft. Orem Lt. Doug Edwards said police usually don't turn to a cell phone company to recover stolen vehicles, but the new GPS technology available in newer models of phones could help officers assist those in need of medical attention.
"It's becoming more and more common," Edwards said. "Chances are when we move into the "phase II," 911 we'll be able to find people using a geographical location much like the system we have now for land lines but because cell phones move they will need GPS."
7-11 ROBBERY SUSPECT ARRESTED -- Kyle Kos, 19, of Springville was arrested by Springville police at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. Police responded to a disturbance call where Kos was allegedly involved in a fight with his roommates. Kos reportedly pulled a knife and inflicted injury on one of the roommates.
Witnesses then took the knife, and later a gun, away from Kos, police said.
Officers who responded to the call found evidence linking Kos to the July 4 robbery at the 7-Eleven store in Springville, 210 N. Main St., police said.
Kos allegedly went to the 7-Eleven store at about 1:30 a.m. July 4 and demanded money at gun point. He left with a small amount of cash, police said. He was treated for minor injuries he had sustained during the fight with his roommates Tuesday and was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and robbery.
