A city council member was honored Tuesday night for years of faithful service to the Provo community.

Barbara Sandstrom, who has served as the council member from District 4 for eight years, attended her final meeting Tuesday night. A reception was held before the City Council meeting, with dozens of friends and community members present.

Sandstrom was presented with a plaque, a silver platter and a medallion by the council, and Mayor Lewis Billings joked that the size of the medallion showed the size of the city's budget.

Billings praised Sandstrom for her dedication and years of service, saying she has been an amazing councilwoman.

"I know that she's a person that's loved serving the people of Provo," he said.

Sandstrom sported a new bob hairdo for the event instead of her usual curls. She said her hairdresser styled her hair straight, and said it took six years off.

"Oh, I need that!" Sandstrom replied.

The packed council room gave Sandstrom a standing ovation as she gave her final goodbyes and thanked the audience for its support.

"I just felt really special that so many people came," she said.
