There will be a benefit yard sale Saturday morning at Robinson Park, 100 E. Main St., to benefit Sam Harrison, who was paralyzed in a snowboarding accident in February and recently returned home from the hospital. Proceeds from the yard sale will help Harrison get the equipment necessary for him to become self-reliant again. Harrison's story can be found at www.donateforsam.org.
The Cedar Valley Civic Improvement Association has announced that the 2008 Cedar Fort Rodeo Queen Contest will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 9 a.m. in the Cedar Fort Arena. Girls ages 11-16 will compete for the queen title. Contestants 10 and under will compete for the princess crown. Little cowgirls five and under are invited to dress in their Western best and ride their toy ponies in the Stick Horse Princess Parade during the queen contest at 11:30 a.m. All events will be held at the Cedar Fort Arena. A "Triple Threat" concert, featuring Black Hawk, Little Texas, and Restless Heart, will be Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at SilverLake Amphitheater, 7920 N. Silverlake Parkway. A fireworks display will follow the concert. Tickets are $15 (kids 2 and under are free) and can be purchased online at SmithsTix.com.
Roberta Merrill, Family and Consumer Science teacher at Spanish Fork High School, was selected to participate in the 2008 Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund (JFMF) Teacher Program, sponsored by the Government of Japan. She will receive a fully-funded three week experience in Japan designed to increase understanding between the people of Japan and the United States. She will meet with Japanese government officials and educators and visit urban schools, museums, and historic landmarks. Mrs. Merrill plans to use the time to expand her knowledge of Oriental architecture, housing, and design issues to share with her interior design students. In addition, she intends to observe Japanese families to compare and contrast issues like discipline and caregiving options to share with her child development classes. She will leave June 8 and return June 26.
