The Saratoga Splash kicks off today with a baby contest at Little Scholars Academy at 10 a.m.
"We're expecting about 50 babies, and we've got gift baskets of baby stuff and door prizes to give away," said Karin Brown, who is organizing the baby contest.
The Fireman's Association will have its annual fundraising breakfast on Saturday morning. The funds raised will purchase equipment and help out the families of individual firefighters who get hurt on the job. The breakfast costs $20 for a family or $4.50 for adults and $3 for kids.
The breakfast, as well as all the Saturday activities, will be at the Saratoga Springs Development clubhouse, 625 S. Saratoga Drive.
The parade has been moved from Saturday morning to 6:30 p.m. so that city royalty floats can participate. Besides the royalty floats, there will also be a bagpipe band and lots of business-sponsored entries. The parade starts at the corner of Centennial and Parkway in the Saratoga Springs Development, and ends at the Parkway and Saratoga Drive, a distance of 0.8 miles.
At 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening, Peter Breinholt will perform at the Saratoga Springs Development clubhouse, 625 S. Saratoga Drive. The concert is free. Bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on. After the concert, there will be a city slide show and military tribute featuring members of the armed forces from Saratoga Springs, followed by fireworks.
ALPINE
There will be a special City Council and Planning Commission meeting today at Alpine City Hall, 20 N. Main St. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., starting with the Planning Commission and followed immediately by the City Council. The purpose of the meetings is to review the Mountainville Academy charter school's site plan for approval. The City Council approved a mass and bulk ordinance at its Tuesday meeting that the charter school's site plan does not fulfill.
AMERICAN FORK
Both the subdivision of property and the site plan for a third building at the Automall Business Center at 500 East, south of Interstate 15, were approved by the Planning Commission on June 7. Two other buildings have already been constructed in the project, and the three buildings will have cross easements for parking, enabling customers to park anywhere in the vicinity.
CEDAR HILLS
The Weed Abatement Task Force is out eliminating weeds throughout the city. Through today, the team will be cutting weeds on city property. Residents should have all weeds on their property removed. After today, the Weed Abatement Task Force will remove residential weeds and send residents the bill. For questions, call the Building Department at 785-6261.
HIGHLAND
A six-month extension for the Highland Hollow subdivision was granted by the Highland City Council on June 6. This is a complicated project that includes a trail. It is on the border of Highland and Lehi at the end of 10400 North. Several lots are on steep hills with natural springs. The council also approved a motion to accept 52 acre feet of ground water for the subdivision. The development code allows for the use of ground water if it originates on the property where the water is to be used. To meet the requirements, 86 additional acre feet of water will be turned over to the city.
LEHI
The Utah Department of Transportation will shut down State Road 73 and Lehi's Main Street on Saturday for the unveiling ceremony of a 9-foot tall $40,000 bronze statue of a cowboy and his bucking horse at Lehi's roundabout at 500 West. Tony Chytka is the artist whose work will be mounted on a boulder at the roundabout. The boulder was donated by Drew Downs of Lehi. The Lehi Roundup Royalty and Miss Lehi Royalty will unveil the statue at approximately 2 p.m.
OREM
A public hearing to address changes to the city code regarding the relocation of billboards, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was extended to June 27 at 6:15 p.m. The hearing will be in the City Council Chambers in the Orem City Center.
PAYSON
Auditions for Upstage Theatre for Youth's production of "The Sound of Music" will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at Peteetneet Academy, 10 S. 600 East, Payson. Hopefuls must be 18 years or younger to try out. Call Kerynne Vance at 465-4482 or Matt Hansen at 420-8301.
PLEASANT GROVE
The 10-year-old Automania Car Show is back for the Strawberry Days City Celebration after a four-year absence. Organized by Chris Brightenburg and Dave Williamson, Automania '06 will be on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wil's Park next to the Pleasant Grove Rodeo Grounds, 200 S. State St. There will be many classic cars, hot rods and trucks on display, as well as food and commemorative T-shirts for sale and a live band to perform. The entertainment will be featured between noon and 2 p.m.
SARATOGA SPRINGS
Sharleen Hargreaves, craft designer at Roberts Crafts, will be teaching watercolor techniques to beginning painters. Participants will finish a small painting each week. The cost is $50 plus supplies. The classes will be at Little Scholars Academy. The Springville Family Literacy Center, in partnership with Art City Elementary School, is hosting its Summer Reading Program. Tutoring began Monday and will continue through Aug. 11. All tutoring will be in the portable unit behind Art City School, 121 E. 900 North.
