The Provo bakery The Sweet Tooth Fairy is already a big hit in the blogging community, but it will have a chance at making a splash nationally Friday with a spotlight on the "Rachael Ray Show."
The bakery's double chocolate fudge cake bites will be featured on the show in the "Snack of the Day" segment, in which host Rachael Ray will introduce the treat to viewers and give audience members a sample, said the show's spokeswoman, Lauren Nowell.
Sweet Tooth Fairy owner Megan Faulkner Brown said she is excited for the opportunity for her treat to be shown to millions of viewers around the country. The segment is only a few seconds long, but Brown said she is grateful for the opportunity and happy just to be recognized by the show.
"That's a huge compliment and is so flattering," she said.
Brown said she was contacted in December after staff members from the show saw a review of her goods on the blog "Cake Spy." She was asked for some samples, and the cake bites were chosen for the feature. The cake bites are some of the most popular treats made at the bakery, especially the chocolate varieties.
Made from leftover cake, the bites are combined with frosting, chocolate, candy, lemon curd or other sweets and then dipped in chocolate. While not her original recipe, Brown puts her own twist on the cake bites by mixing some with her unique frosting.
"They're something kind of different, and a little unexpected," she said.
Brown said being featured on the show is a big feat for her expanding business, which will be moving into a shop in a couple of weeks at 1227 S. University Ave. The few seconds on the show is better advertising than she could ever pay for, she said, and she hopes it will get people excited to taste the products.
"I just hope that it will pique people's curiosity," she said.
Brown said she is hoping that not only locals will get excited about the bakery, but people all around the country. The bakery has operated through its Web site, www.thesweettoothfairy.com, for three years and has clients around the country already. The 150 audience members who will receive a box of six cake bites will all be able to order from the bakery in the future as well.
Brown said she knew "Cake Spy" had a large following, but she still never expected to be contacted by the "Rachael Ray Show." When she first received the e-mail, she thought it could be a scam, like the common "Nigerian prince" scams, she said. She searched the Internet for about an hour, making sure the e-mail was legitimate, then quickly accepted the opportunity.
Lindsey Cord, Brown's friend, said she was not surprised by the invitation to be the "Snack of the Day." Cord said Brown has worked very hard with her bakery through the years and is very popular on blogs like "Design Mom" and "Your Heart Out."
"I'm so excited for her, and I think her dreams are coming true," she said.
Cord said she is happy the show will be featuring the cake bites, which she said are popular because they are new and unique. The treats taste like a "cakey truffle," and Cord enjoys them because they are obviously made from scratch. All of Brown's work is amazing because she puts her heart into the baking and loves the work, Cord said.
"She's passionate about what she does," Cord said. "And that's what makes the difference."
The cake bites will be featured as the "Snack of the Day" on the "Rachael Ray Show" today at 10 a.m. on KSL, channel 5.
