Provo police say a computer theft suspect asked a Provo hotel employee to shred several financial documents and later nearly escaped from a patrol car Sunday night.

An employee at the Hampton Hotel called police after noticing a tenant, Jacob D. Busk of Richfield, was acting suspiciously, according to a police report.

Busk had asked the employee to tell anyone who calls for him that he had already checked out, when Busk had in fact asked for another night at the hotel. During a time when Busk was away from the hotel, according to the report, the employee said Busk called every half hour to make sure no one had gone into his room.

When Busk returned to the hotel, the employee said he handed over a pizza box with papers inside and asked the employee to shred them. The employee later looked in the box and found receipts from Zions Bank for thousands of dollars. Officers responding to the employee's call discovered that Richfield police were investigating Busk on theft and burglary charges, and Richfield police asked that he be detained, the report says.

An hour later, a Provo officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and found Busk in the vehicle. According to the report, Busk admitted to the officer that he was in possession of stolen property and let officers search his hotel room, where they found a stolen computer worth $5,000. Busk had also altered his driver's license by taping a different name onto it.

While Busk was detained in an officer's car, he managed to manipulate his handcuffs so they were in front of him. He also removed the side panel of the patrol car door to gain access to the door locks, the report says.
