PROVO -- Provo shoppers looking for Walmart prices? Your wish has been granted. Walmart has announced they will be opening a new Neighborhood Market at 2255 N. University Parkway -- filling the vacated Fresh Market store.

According to Bill Peperone, Provo city planner, an application has been made by Nearon Enterprises, Danville, Calif., owner of the Parkway strip mall where the store is located, for a site plan change. Those changes include the addition of the Walmart market.

"There will be few changes to the look of the store outside," Peperone said. He noted the outside facade won't look much different than just adding the Walmart sign to it.

The Neighborhood Markets are meant to be smaller and are for shoppers who like fewer crowds and quicker checkout lines. The stores include a full line of groceries and a number of other products. They are usually about a third of the size of the Walmart big box stores like the one farther west on University Parkway, across from Utah Valley University.

The Parkway location features 44,079 square feet of space. While an opening date has not been announced, Nearon will not have to go through the city's planning commission or municipal council for approvals because the retail space has already been used as a grocery store and it fits the zoning requirements.
