When Steve and Jeanie Westover of Highland started a pumpkin growing contest in May between themselves and their kids, their hopes were set on the prize of growing the biggest pumpkin. What they didn't expect was to win by growing the tallest.

Throughout the summer months Jeanie and Steve checked on the blossoms of the pumpkin vine and noticed they were all dying.

"The vine looked like it died," Jeanie Westover recalls.

In August, Jeanie's husband, Steve, noticed a vine growing up the trunk of an adjacent Golden Delicious apple tree.At the end of the vine he discovered a pumpkin suspended at the top of what the Westover's now call their "pumpkin tree."
