The Utah Department of Transportation and its contractor, Provo River Constructors, announced Wednesday that the section on Interstate 15 from Lehi to Pleasant Grove is complete. All six lanes in each direction are scheduled to open to traffic.

"Opening this section of the freeway is the first of many significant milestones for the I-15 CORE project through December as we work to complete the project in an unprecedented 35 months," project director Todd Jensen said in a news release. "We still have a lot of work to do this summer. At the same time, this first complete segment of the project offers a sneak peek of the economic and transportation benefits the entire project will provide when it is complete this December."

I-15 from Lehi to Lindon has been widened from four lanes to six in each direction, five general travel lanes plus an Express lane. The American Fork 500 East interchange was reconstructed as a diverging diamond interchange, and the new Sam White bridge -- the longest two-span bridge ever moved in one night via self-propelled modular transporters in the western hemisphere -- was reconstructed. Crews also have installed new electronic message signs and monitoring equipment to ensure traffic flows smoothly in the area.

Construction continues through the remainder of the project from Pleasant Grove to Spanish Fork, as crews work to pave new freeway lanes, build new on- and off-ramps and install signs and safety features. In Orem, northbound I-15 is reduced to three lanes, and the 800 North interchange is closed through mid-July, with long-term closures scheduled this summer at the Orem Center Street and 1600 North interchanges.

Freeway lanes and ramps also are under construction in Provo, Springville and Spanish Fork.
