LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson announced on Saturday that the minimum age for missionaries is changing to 18 years old for men and 19 years old for women.

The change came at the Saturday morning session of the church's semiannual general conference. Prior to this, men had to be 19 and women had to be 21 years old before serving.

The church did have flexible ages country by country to allow young men who wanted to serve a mission before entering their country's military to do so. That change now applies worldwide.

The LDS Church has more than 50,000 young men and women serving missions throughout the world.

Monson also announced new temples in Tucson, Ariz., and Peru.
