At the Cedar Hills Family Festival on June 27, parade-goers were treated to a grand marshal who has been a Cedar Hills resident for more than a decade.

The Herald caught up with Greg Wrubell the Monday after his vacation to Arizona and the Grand Canyon. He'll next be off to Hawaii later this month. He vacations often during the summer months, because once the college sports season starts, he's almost always on the job. He works as a sportscaster for KSL's Salt Lake City radio station.

He keeps his family close by involving them in his work. His wife and four children join him for most home games. Then when he's on the road following the team, he brings his children along at least once a year. His wife joins him for a few, too.

Wrubell has been a Cedar Hills resident since 1998.

"We felt 11 years ago it was this great secret. Now we've watched it grow up around us, and even as it grows it's still a beautiful city," Wrubell said.

He especially loves the walking trails in the city. He's a jogger, "not the fastest in the world," and he enjoys "nice runs with good scenery."

Still, before the Family Festival parade, he'd only walked with his children in the Cedar Hills children's parades, back when they were held years ago.

"I'm just pretty honored and kind of humbled by it all. I never would have seen myself as a representative for the city that way," Wrubell said.

"He's a celebrity in the sports world, and we thought the time was long overdue that he should be invited to do this," said Mike Carson, who works for the city recorder's office. "And he seemed like the kind of guy that would enjoy being involved in the festival."

Ashley Vogelsberg, the Cedar Hills festival coordinator, said the city picked Wrubell because they are always looking for someone "somewhat visible" from the city.
