LINDON -- Lindon City is expected to get an economic boost with the opening of a new Murdock Hyundai dealership in the late fall.

The new dealership received City Council approval last week to start renovating. It will replace the old and vacant Larry Miller used-car lot next to the Lexus and Mercedes dealerships off the 1600 North exit, said Blake Murdock, the store's general manager.

"Business has been continually increasing in Orem," added Murdock. "The Hyundai brand is doing a good job of making their cars more affordable. The move is just an expansion. We have outgrown our Orem store."

City Council members said they were concerned about the city's revenues and budget during last week's meeting, but the new dealership is expected to help.

The city will receive a portion of the sales tax revenue from the new dealership said Adam Cowie, Lindon City Planning and Economic Development Director.

"It is a win-win situation," said Lindon City Councilman Eric Anthony. "Hyundai needed to expand their business but couldn't find a place in Orem. We needed more revenue for the city due to a lack of sales tax revenue with the bad economy."

Hyundai is the only car dealership that has increased revenue during the economic downturn, Anthony said.

"Business should continue to be good with their prime location being right next to both Orem and Lindon freeway exits," said Anthony.

The new dealership is more than three times the size of its original Orem home. The dealership has become one of the largest dealers in their district said Murdock.

Renovation is expected to be a 9 to 15 week process with a tentative completion date of Nov. 15.

"Our goal is to become one of the biggest dealerships in the state and in the western United States," Murdock said.
