In girls' softball, there are very few teams in this state tougher to beat than the Lehi Pioneers when they are at their best, and they are always at their best against Spanish Fork. Lehi has one of the best pitchers in the state in Ariel Zimmerman, and she kept the Dons hitting in check allowing only 4 runs in the first 5 innings of the game, nearly a run per inning. Meanwhile the Dons kept the Pioneers scoreless for the first 4 innings, and allowed only 1 run in the 5th inning.
The run in the 1st inning was scored by the two senior Kylees. Kylee Brinkerhoff reached base on a single, and scored on a hit to left center by Kylee Bufton.
Junior Janessa Nielsen scored the run in the 2nd inning by getting on with a walk, being advanced on a single by Senior Lea Adamson, and scored by Brinkerhoff.
In the 3rd inning, Sophomore Lyndsey Healey led off with a line drive double to left center. She was advanced on a bunt that Bufton beat out for a hit, and Healey scored on a ground ball out hit by Junior Rachelle Remund.
The 4th inning started off with a triple hit to right field by Senior Tina Ferguson, and she was scored on a single hit to left field by Senior Katelyn Elliott.
In the bottom of the 5th inning the home team Dons went scoreless which brought the score to 4-1 after five innings of play.
However in the 6th inning, Junior Dezlee Robert began to wear down, as she was dinged for a home run and a hard hit single, so she left the game seeing 19 at-bats, allowing 7 hits for two runs and had a shut out going until the 5th inning. She pitched a solid game for this early in the season. Senior Cami Robinson came to the game sick, so Freshman Kailey Christensen replaced Roberts and shut down the next three batters with two strike outs and a popped fly to the catcher.
Lehi also changed pitchers in the 6th inning, and the Dons broke out scoring 4 more runs. T. Ferguson started off the inning with a walk, Brinkerhoff bunted for a base hit advancing the runner. Elliott scored Ferguson on a single to right field, and Healey scored two more runs on a double to right center. Bufton then hit in Healey with a double to left center for another run. After six innings of play, the Dons were up 8-2.
You can never count the Pioneers out. In the top of the 7th and final inning, the Pioneers dug down deep and came alive with their sticks. They strung five hits together, of which the last two hits were home runs, before the Dons retired the Pioneers. This brought the Pioneers back to tie the Dons at 8. However, the Dons scored another run in the bottom of the last inning to pull out the win 9-8. Lea Adamson scored the winning run by getting on with a single. Ferguson bunted her around, and Brinkerhoff scored Adamson on a bunt that was misplayed by Lehi's third baseman.
It was an exciting game with the Pioneers showing real grit, but the Dons came through again when it really counted to get the win.
