Expect to see familiar faces at Mountain Ridge Junior High's presentation of "Tom, Dick, and Harry," by Ray and Michael Cooney, running tomorrow and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for students.
The play is a comedy featuring bright sets, a goofy premise, British accents, and even some Albanian characters, in every sense of the word.
It is the story of a British couple, Tom and Linda Kerwood, who are attempting to adopt a baby.
"Trouble develops when brothers Dick and Harry Kerwood smuggle contraband into England, and attempt to dispose of human body parts in the back garden," said drama teacher and director Tom Stokoe. Chaos erupts further when two illegal Albanian aliens come, and the bag of body parts is taken to the British version of Deseret Industries.
Sam Smalley plays Tom, Katelyn Smith is Linda, and Caden Watts and Nikko Pedersen are Dick and Harry. Joseph Glancy has fun in his role as Andreas, the 80-year-old Albanian, and elicits quite a few laughs, even though no one on stage or in the audience can understand a word he says.
"He and Katie Casper (who plays Andreas' daughter), actually speak true Albanian throughout the play," said Stokoe. "Their accents might not be perfect, but they are speaking actual Albanian words."
On the other hand, many of the other actors did have to really practice their British accents to make it seem authentic.
"I picked this play for the comedy, because kids like comedy, but also as a chance for these actors to practice British accents," said Stokoe.
His actors were thoroughly immersed in their characters at the dress rehearsal last Friday. When problems with the mikes and sounds happened, Sam and Katelyn paused in a scene and shouted instructions up to the sound crew with their full British accents, and then went on with their lines.
The play is set in a modern full mock-up of the front living room of a home, with a confusing array of doors that Tom must keep track of, while sending the police one way, the Albanians another, and his brothers the other.
The light and sound crew include Garret Casutt, Jacob Sheffield, Christian Lopez, Ryan Morin, Blake Walton, Michael St. Clair and Jeff Hinton.
