Members of the Springville High School Class of 1990 gave back to the school as they celebrated their 20th reunion at the SHS Homecoming last weekend. A large gathering of class members and their families and members of the Pete Roundy Family met on Saturday in front of the high school to dedicate a permanent bench in honor of Pete.

Roundy taught American history and psychology for 17 years at Springville High School and helped coach many of the sports teams including the golf team. In 1987, when the Class of 1990 entered the high school, Roundy was made vice-principal where he served the entire time the class attended SHS.

Peter Smith, 1990 Senior Class president, said that it was the goal of the class to give something back to the school and it didn't take long to focus on Pete. "We all had contact with him while we were students," said Smith, "whether it was being reprimanded for something we did, or just knowing he was our friend. Pete was a great person who gave and gave."

Lorna Bird Newbold and Nici Robertson Sorenson were in charge of the class project. They decided to have a garage sale just before Homecoming to raise funds to pay for the bench and bronze plaque that was placed on it. '"They raised almost $1,000 at the sale," said Smith.

Newbold said that, "Pete had great empathy for the kids here at the high school. He even gave money to kids who needed it. He once purchased a coat for a high school boy who didn't have one. Some kids even called him in the middle of the night with their problems," she said.

Newbold also said that Pete's wife, Peggy, always loved the students at Springville High too.

Pete's son, Robby, thanked the Class of 1990 on behalf of the Roundy Family. "This is a real tribute to our Dad and our family," he said.

The bench was made by Brailsford Pre-cast in Springville and can be seen along the sidewalk as you enter the front door of the school.

Pete also served on the Springville City Council and participated in many activities in the community. He passed away in 2003 of cancer.
