Buffalo Chip to a Murray Energy Corp. subsidiary for repeatedly violating mine safety laws in Carbon County. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration levied a $420,300 fine on Andalex Resources Inc. for allowing the accumulation of hydraulic oils and coal particles on electric equipment and coal dust on conveyor belts, all of which could have helped trigger an explosion at the company's Tower mine. The "flagrant" violations are especially disturbing because, of course, Murray Energy ran the Crandall Canyon mine, where nine miners died in a pair of collapses in August. Reports like this shake the company's credibility almost as badly as the company's boss, Bob Murray.
Beehive to Isaac Skarstedt, 10, of Lakeview Academy in Saratogoa Springs, for winning the Utah Valley Spelling bee. He spent 25 days practicing for the event, and it paid off. We wish him good luck at the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May in Washington, D.C.
Buffalo Chip to an unidentified truck driver whose vehicle was piled too high with wrecked cars. A week ago, the semitrailer's load crashed into an overpass in Spanish Fork Canyon, bringing it to an unexpected halt. Two cars then smashed into the back of the truck. No one was hurt, but Highway 6 was closed for several hours. What's so hard about using a tape measure before you hit the road ... or an overpass?
Beehive to students helping others during Y Week. In just one example, about 30 students joined with residents at Cove Point Retirement Community in Provo for an evening of fun and games. We salute those who think of others at a time of year when many college students across the fruited plain are thinking about Cancun.
