"Bike to Work Week" brought a whirl of activity to Utah Valley last week. Provo Mayor Lewis Billings and Orem Mayor Jerry Washburn led rides to encourage people to peddle their way through those cities.

Of course, a ceremonial ride with local bigwigs is different from the challenges facing people who bicycle though the streets to commute to work every day, or who just want fresh air and some exercise.

Local officials are developing a trail and bike master plan for Orem, with a goal of linking it to the plans of Provo, Lindon and Vineyard. That's a good idea. Bicycling in a city has always posed risks. Today, drivers are so busy talking on cell phones that they can be oblivious than ever to any vehicle smaller than a semi-truck.

Developing trails and better bike lanes will help the area by making it easier for people to enjoy this fun, healthy and environmentally friendly activity. We hope the cities continue to support this community resource.
