Beehive to Ron Hatfield, chairman of the board of Lindon-based In Our Own Quiet Way; Dr. Kimball M. Crofts, the lead surgeon for Humanitarian Aid Relief Team; and a slew of other volunteers for helping the Kenyan village of Kakamega. Crofts headed a team including physicians, a dentist and other health professionals who made life better for the villagers. They sought no public reward, but they richly deserve one.

Beehive to County Sgt. Tom Hodgson for saving a dog from icy Utah Lake. Responding to a call about a dog struggling in the water, Hodgson donned a waterproof suit and began walking across the fragile ice toward the sound of barking. An Australian shepherd ran up to him, then turned and led him to a hole in the ice with a struggling black Labrador. Hodgson used a "catch pole" from a Santaquin animal control officer to loop the dog's head and drag it out. Additional rescuers brought a stretcher to use as a sled for the risky trip back over the ice. Both dogs recuperated at the South County Animal Shelter and were later retrieved by their owner. Sometimes man can be dog's best friend.

Beehive to Cedar Fort residents Kelly Berry, Rebecca Moore and Moore's two children, Jason and Mary, for carrying on the annual Cedar Fort Christmas Eve Program. Berry is the program writer and director of "An Old-fashioned Christmas Story," centering on a mother played by Moore and her children. Kudos also to officials from the Alpine School District and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for working out issues that threatened the staging of the pageant at a former church chapel that is now owned by the school district.

Beehive to Dr. Charles Stewart, a Utah Valley surgeon, and others who repaired the cleft palate of Emilio Bedoya, 14, a Lakeridge Junior High student. The condition is almost completely unknown in the U.S. these days, but Stewart is familiar with the condition because of medical humanitarian missions he has gone on in Mexico, Guatemala and Peru.
