On Monday, the Daily Herald welcomes a new editor for its editorial pages.
After a nationwide search, James E. Tynen was chosen for the job, replacing Donald W. Meyers, who resigned in July.
Tynen hails from Pittsburgh, Pa., where he served in various capacities in newspapers and academia. Most recently he has been a columnist and copy editor for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
At the Herald, Tynen will be a member of the editorial board -- joining publisher Craig Dennis and executive editor Randy Wright. He will take overall responsibility for the presentation of the Editorials page, writing daily opinions, soliciting viewpoints from the community and developing new approaches using online multimedia and the Herald's TV channel, MStar channel 74.
"I am thrilled to get someone of Jim's caliber," said Wright. "Not only is he an exceptional writer, he is one of those rare individuals who have mastered both current events and history. His insight will make a real difference in our community."
Formerly student publications adviser at the University of Pittsburgh, Tynen taught journalism and had overall responsibility for the student newspaper. Earlier, he taught journalism and writing at Eastern Illinois University and at Richland Community College, also in Illinois. He has been a technical writer for a marketing firm and co-authored the Facts on File book "America the Quotable."
He holds a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a bachelor's from the same institution.
Tynen can be reached at (801) 344-2544, or by e-mail at jtynen@heraldextra.com.
