Buffalo Chip to Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff for failing to enforce the law on companies that don't report campaign contributions. Shurtleff is the chief law enforcement officer of the state, so he should have a particular interest in this. And indeed he does. Some 20 corporations donated $147,910 to him last year but did not disclose. Shurtleff passed the buck, saying it's the job of the Lieutenant Governor's Office to tell him of such cases. Why is company disclosure important? Because a member of the public shouldn't have to check hundreds of individual politicians' disclosures to see how one company spreads money around. Donations should be listed by company name and by recipient. It's called transparency.
Beehives to volunteers from the Canyon Hollows LDS ward in Ogden, members of the military and another Ogden group who cleared snow and ice from the trail to Timpanogos Cave. The work is especially tough this year, as the harsh winter left 18 feet of snow in some places. It's dangerous too: Rocks often tumble down onto the trail. One worker was hit by two rocks in one day, but fortunately was not injured. We salute the people whose dedication makes it possible for others to visit that beautiful site by mid-May each year. We appreciate the help of our neighbors from Ogden, but couldn't we get some Utah Valley people up there, too? Volunteers are still needed.
Buffalo Chip to Alejandro "Alex" Urrutia-Garcia, who was the human exploitation ... er, resources manager at Universal Industrial Sales Inc. in Lindon when the company was raided by U.S. Customs agents in February. Urrutia-Garcia, 38, pleaded guilty to assisting two illegal immigrants in getting jobs at the company. Of course, he wouldn't have known that half the company's workforce was illegal. Would he? The company is facing other immigration-related charges but is contesting them. So we'll hold a few more Buffalo Chips in reserve just in case.
Beehive to the 7,000 students who put on an awesome Hope of America show at the Marriott Center on BYU campus Wednesday. It's one of the first big events of America's Freedom Festival. And kudos to the teachers and parents who also helped make the event a big success -- particularly Kathy Macdonald, who spearheaded the effort.
