Count adult passengers only toward HOV-lane limit

Editor's note: The Daily Herald asked readers if they would be willing to pay $50 a month to ride by themselves in the HOV lane. Here are the comments we received:

I'm against being able to buy your way into that lane. That would really jam it up. I also think that infants in car seats should not be counted as a second person, in this case. Only adults who could drive a second car, or your adult partner, should be counted. I'm sure you'll find when the addition to that lane south to Orem is completed, lots more multi-person cars will use it.

Eliminate HOV lane entirely

Our main concern should be traffic safety. One of the best ways to increase road safety is to decrease traffic congestion. The easiest way to accomplish this is to remove the lane restrictions altogether. Convert the HOV lane into a general purpose lane. The result would be increased safety by reducing traffic congestion and other HOV related problems. The problem with this simple solution is that we would have to give up our premise that HOV lanes will increase carpooling. After years of studies the facts are in, HOV lanes do not increase the percentage of carpooling vehicles.

HOV passes a way to give rich privilege over poor

I would not pay $50 to use the HOV lane, and I think it sends entirely the wrong message to send. You have the privilege if you have the money. It is a discrimination against those who do not have that money.

Only people with legitimate need should get HOV passes

I wouldn't be willing to, but I think the people who have legitimate jobs that need to travel in the lane by themselves back and forth to work should be allowed to buy tickets. People who are retired like I am that have a bunch of money to throw it away should not be allowed to drive in that lane and slow down everyone else that is in a carpool. This would make it equitable, but it shouldn't be a money thing. It should be two people or a work situation.
